This 2 day program will take you to see and learn more about the area in the vicinity of Boquillas. Our guests arrive at the Port of Entry at 9am, then take the row boat across the Rio Grande and meet the Boquillas Adventures guides. From there we have the option of taking a short canoe trip or a short hike in the area of Boquillas Canyon, having lunch on the trail or by the river.
MEXICO – Casa Piedra Overnight
After lunch we will head south, stopping briefly at the small village of Las Norias, before arriving at Casa Piedra, or San Jose de las Piedras, its official name. During the journey, our guests will learn how a high quality wax is extracted from the native Candelilla plant. The impoverished community of Las Norias has survived by wax making since mining activity ceased. Candelilla is slow to recover after harvesting, leading to its scarcity.
Boquillas Adventures is trying to introduce tourism activities to the area as an alternative to extractive processes, and limit wax production to small scale demonstrations of this historic activity. Our goal is to engender a culture of environmental restoration through sustainable tourism practices.
We arrive at Casa Piedras late afternoon . Dinner will be served by our host family. After dinner, we will have a campfire and view the amazing night sky.
After breakfast on day 2, we will explore the prolific pictographs in the jumble of boulders that surround Casa Piedra. Afterwards we visit Javoncillos, and have lunch with a local family before returning to Boquillas in time to cross the river before the Port of Entry closes at 4 pm.
Cost for the tour is $295 per person plus applicable taxes, with a $100 deposit to reserve space. Upon receipt of deposit, you will get a confirmation by email along with a check list for what to bring and how to prepare.
