MEXICO – Maderas del Carmen

Day 1: 9:00am

Meet at Boquillas Port of Entry. Consolidate personal gear into waterproof bags to protect from dust on the road. Take time for a quick breakfast before heading out.

We are on dirt road for over an hour, passing the villages of Las Norias and Jaboncillos. Shortly after passing Jaboncillos, we hit paved road for a few miles. We meet our guide/drivers at the entrance of Reserva Natural El Carmen, then begin our drive into the magnificent high country of Maderas del Carmen. After a bumpy, sometimes very bumpy drive using 4-wheel drive, we climb almost 4000 feet to our base camp and cabins, at 7800’ above sea level. We check into our accommodation, where we spend 3 nights.

Days 2 and 3

Our days at Campo 2 start with a hearty breakfast before heading out into the amazing back country of Maderas del Carmen. Typically, we drive a way and then walk, sometimes at elevations of 8500’ or more. Some of the walks are fairly easy, sometimes rough. The driving is always rough; its hard to believe that these are actually roads.

Day 4

Up early and start the day with another full breakfast before packing up and heading down the mountain and back to Boquillas, where we need to be across the river before 4 pm.
